GRAVEYARDS IN CEYLON South & West Vol V
£10.50
A collection of memorials (about 798) and biographical details from surveys and written sources found in Hambantota to Negombo. They consist mainly of gravestones belonging to the Dutch and their descendants who dominated the towns of Galle and Matara from 1685 to 1798. Many inscriptions are in the old Dutch language and have been transcribed with the help of a translator. The British personnel include administrators, sailors, missionaries and planters. There are also a few of Portuguese origin. Several stones have been lost since the survey of 1910 but many others not previously recorded were found in the later one. The continuation of history in the South and West from the Portuguese to the Dutch through to the British is clearly shown in its gravestones.
